Ovulation and Getting Pregnant

Which days of the month do you tend to ovulate? Or, do you ovulate at all? If you don’t already know, infertility evaluation will reveal your unique trend and help determine why you have trouble getting pregnant.

Your mother’s generation tracked ovulation by counting the days in a menstrual cycle and placing ovulation in the middle of the cycle, and/or using physical signs of ovulation:

  • A rise in “baseline” body temperature by 0.5 to 2 degrees. Your basal body temperature (the lowest reading each day) can be charted to pinpoint the day it spikes.
  • A change in cervical mucous to a stretchy, thin consistency
  • Mild abdominal aches, usually on one side

Today, couples get an accurate read on ovulation with over-the-counter ovulation kits that detect luteinizing hormone in urine.  The LH surge with its color change on the urine testing strip indicates that your body is ovulating, and it’s time to try for a baby.
